Baba Yaga and the Knight
Inspirtion
I based my art on the story of Baba Yaga and of a knight. In folktales baba yaga is a sweet old lady but is a witch that eats childern. I herad this story from a old student teacher of my when I was in Second or Thrid grade. It started with a knight trying to prove himself by making himself a legend. He went to the woods and meet a old women asking him for help. The women told him that she was being attacked by a goblin each night. the knight ignored it saying it was a waste of his time. The women told to him that if he helped he would become a legend for years to come. The knight agreed immediately to take care of that goblin. Later that night, the knight found the goblin and killed it with one stab but once the goblin died he heard a child scream. The knight did not kill a so called goblin but a dwarf. The knight went near the scared child and then many more childern came out. He trued to explain what happened but before he could speak the old women screamed saying "he killed your father because he was trying to help me." The childern screams getting louder and louder before he know it he ran as fast as he could just to get away from the childern screams. The kids scared and alone went to the sweet old lady until she laughted looking at them saying " It looks like my dinner is coming." The reason I brought up the story is for what it meant to me. I wanted my art to show how we jugde with out knowing everything that happens. We jump to conclusions and can never truly understand unless we take the time to look at it.
Planning
I wanted to bring out the part if the story of when baba yaga tricked the knight. I wanted to show baba yaga the knight and the forest with the childern crying or screaming at the knight. I wanted to base it off of a a drypoint of the little red riding hood. I want to give my whole art piece tons of cuts so there is very little white shapes until it slowly hits the light. I am thinking of cutting on a angle and not putting in lots of force for less ink to get in.

The first of the skecths is the knight and Baba Yaga fcaing towords the childern. I wanted the knight to face away from her for the reason to show that not everyone can truley understand what happens even if you ar ein the problem. I didn't pick it because of the scale of everything and in the story the knight turned to see Baba Yaga with the body.
The second on is of just the knight facing the childern with sword in hand. I wanted this one to let us have a view and I wanted people to think that he was going to kill them just like the story. I didn't choose this one ethier because it didn't feature Baba Yaga which she was the one to bring the knight and also it is called "Baba Yaga and the Knight." I made the thrid one is trying to show how perspectives differ. The knight worried and confuessed but still big and mencing look for the childern to be scared. Baba Yaga back turned toward the childern to keep the look of a sweet old women but towards the viewer with a horrific face. This is the one I choose because it had all the meanings I wanted and had it all in view. |
Process
After the skecths for my art I choose the the third. I cut in to my template the design from before. I wanted to keep the small cuts close together in darker spaces but slowly separate in the light. I expected this to be easy but the tool kept on fight me when trying to keep some lines separate
When trying to get Baba Yaga in the art something went wrong. I didn't just want a huge empty space so I tried to make a huge shadow that looked like it was gettign closer but even that looked bad. I didn't want that empty space so I tried to add some shadows in the back so it would look to broing. I moved the ink in one direction. It might be a small deatil but I liked how it came out in the end.
If I had to redo this I would try to add Baba Yaga right after the doing the back ground and do the kids faces last. I would try to add more shading on the kids and the ground. I would also want to make each of the
